About Elephant Poo Paper

Maximus Maximus Elephant Dung Paper is 100% recycled handmade from elephant dung and office waste paper manufactured in Sri Lanka by Maximus. Elephants are vegetarians, consuming a diet rich in plant fibre and an adult elephant eats 180kg of vegetation and produces 100kg of dung daily. This waste product is perfect for making paper using tradition handmade paper production methods. In Sri Lanka, elephants and humans compete over scarce land resources causing casualties on both sides. To help solve this problem Import Ants and Maximus have created a sustainable industry that employs villagers to make the paper and the finished products. The production of the paper directly contributes to the villager’s income and a percentage of the profits go to the Millennium Elephant Foundation, affiliated with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), which provides a sanctuary, medical services and care for working elephants. The Millennium Elephant Foundation is committed to the preservation of the endangered Sri Lankan elephant. Maximus’ initial factory was started in Kegalle, next to the Millennium Elephant Foundation and under the “Peace Paper Plan” early in 2011 a new facility was opened in the Rangirigama, Dambulla area that borders on the jungle and is in a conflict “hot” spot area where wild elephants and humans compete. By providing eco-friendly alternative work to farming that links the wild elephants to the economy in these areas we hope to change the attitudes and perceptions towards protecting wildlife in the long run. Maximus won the BBC World Challenge, a global competition for small businesses that have shown enterprise and innovation at a grass roots level. It has also won the Greening America “Green Leadership Award” for its efforts to build a more socially just and ecologically sustainable economy. The objective is to create a mutual and beneficial relationship between man and beast by making conservation profitable and sustainable. Maximus adheres to fair trade principles, paying above award wages, does not employ child labour, provides safe working conditions and is an environmentally conscious company. The paper making process takes about 13 days. First the sun dried dung is purified by boiling it at 120 degrees in a sealed high-pressure boiler. Then the pulp is mixed to break up the fibers, waste paper and salt dyes are then added before being spread onto submerged screens to create sheets of approximately 650mm x 900mm. No bleaches or acids are used in the production of the paper. After, the sheets are pressed to extract the water, then hung in the shade to dry. Finally it is passed through heated rollers to seal and flatten the paper. From these sheets the products are then made.
